The 12 days Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most iconic trekking routes that offers a complete Himalayan experience with the challenge of crossing one of the high mountain passes of the country, the Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). From the subtropical forests to arid desert-like landscapes resembling the Tibetan plateau, the Annapurna Circuit Trekking Itinerary of 12 days ensures you a journey that is not only adrenaline-rushing but also scenically diverse as well.
Typically beginning with a drive to Chame from Kathmandu officially on the 2nd day, the Annapurna Circuit Hiking Trail was once among the best camping expedition-style trekking in Nepal. But now is one of the less trodden teahouse high Himalayan adventures where you can find teahouses, guest houses, and lodges in between the traditional mountain villages such as Pisang, Manang, Muktinath, Lupra, and Jomsom.
Inhabited by Gurungs, Managis, and Thakali, you also have an opportunity to relish the warm hospitality of the locals and deeply understand their culture, and if your visit coincides with local festivals, you even get to participate in the celebration. In the lap of the majestic hills and Himalayas, stunning Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre stretched as far as the eye could see; the Annapurna Circuit Himalayan trip is worth it.
Bookings are now open at I Trek Himalayan for the years 2026 and 2027. The Annapurna Circuit Trek Cost includes an exclusive package price from arranging the meals, lodges, and permits to a mandatory guide. While the total Annapurna Circuit Trekking Cost may vary based on group size, services chosen, and the addition of side trips, it is without any hidden cost and is reasonable. What makes the round trip to Annapurna special?
Often referred to as the golden child of high-altitude trekking in Nepal, what makes the Annapurna Circuit Trek special is its nature. Instead of hiking to a point and back, such as the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Langtang Valley Trek, and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. You take a round trip where you never see the same view twice. You enter deeper into the Annapurna Conservation Area, the largest conservation area of Nepal.
Known for its diverse landscape, from subtropical forests to arid desert-like ones to the trans-Himalayan rain shadow areas, including 6-8 hours of daily walking, especially with steep ascents and descents and rocky trails in and around the Thorong La Pass, as much as it is scenic, it is challenging as well, especially due to the high altitude. With the increase in altitude, the level of oxygen drops, and hence it is not a convenient journey for seasoned trekkers.
A less crowded Annapurna Trekking in Nepal
In comparison to other popular Himalayan treks in the Annapurna trekking region of Nepal, such as the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, and the Khopra Danda Trek, the Annapurna Circuit Trek Trail sees fewer trekkers through the years, including during the times of the year taken as peak seasons for high-altitude trekking and climbing: spring and autumn from March to May and September to November.
The recent addition to the roads means access to the Annapurna Circuit Trekking is easier, or you also have an option to choose a quieter new route, such as the extensions to Manang Valley and Tilicho Valley. The Annapurna Circuit Trek still offers you a peaceful escape; you can enjoy solitude and raw Himalayan landscapes without larger crowds, or you also have a choice to opt for shorter alternatives with reduced foot traffic.
The diverse culture and nature of the Annapurna Conservation Area
Established in 1986 and spread over an area of 7,929 square kilometers across the five districts of Manang, Mustang, Kaski, Myagdi, and Lamjung, the Annapurna Circuit hiking route is also part of the largest conservation area of Nepal, the Annapurna Conservation Area. It boasts a diverse landscape from lush subtropical forests to the barren, dry, and rugged terrain without any vegetation at all, in stark contrast to the snow-capped mountain ranges.
Along with it, the conservation area is also home to various ethnic communities of Nepal and a wide range of flora and fauna. In the Upper Himalayas of the Annapurna live the Manangi, Thakali, and communities with close cultural ties to Tibet, and while you are on the Annapurna Circuit trekking route, you have an opportunity to get a real insight into the lives here. Likewise, on lucky days, you may also come across rare wildlife like red pandas and musk deer.
Epic mountain views and equally remarkable challenges of the Thorong La Pass
From the start of the Annapurna Circuit hiking to the end, you can relish the constant mountain views of the Annapurna ranges, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Himalchuli, Lamjung Himal, Nilgiri, and others, which are especially stunning from the Thorong La Pass. Also, the highest point of the entire round Himalayan trip of Mt. Annapurna is at around 5,416 m above sea level; besides being one of the major challenges, it is the ultimate Annapurna viewpoint.
Regardless of the seasons you are trekking to, the trails here can be snowy. Though not technical, to make it to the top of the Thorong La Pass is a steep climb, and then to Mukinath is a downhill walk. The main concern here is the high altitude, as with the increase in altitude, the level of oxygen decreases. If rushed, you may suffer from the symptoms of altitude sickness and can be affected by the unpredictable Himalayan weather, so a good mindset is a must.
Can you add 2-3 extra days to the standard Annapurna Circuit Trekking Itinerary of 12 days?
Yes, the 12 days is the standard Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary from I Trek Himalayan begins right with your arrival in Kathmandu, Nepal. On the second day, is when the journey officially starts with a drive to Chame. Then from Chame you enter deeper into the Annapurna Conservation Area via the traditional villages of Pisang and Manang, with an acclimatization day at Manang, Yak Kharka, Muktinath (via Thorong La Pass), and Jomsom via Lupra village.
From Jomsom is a drive to Pokhara and then a flight over to Kathmandu before the trip officially ends on day 12 with a departure to your home country or next destination. If your health, fitness level, time, and budget support it, yes, you may choose to spend some extra days at preferred villages or side trips to Tilicho Lake. We are happy to make the arrangements for you; it may affect the overall Annapurna Circuit Trekking Cost, but it is totally worth it, including for 2026 and 2027.
